Preparing for Exotic Pets

For those who aren't interested in the standard dog or cat, there are plenty of exotic pets to choose from. However, before you buy exotic pets, you need to carefully consider what goes into owning them. It would also be a good idea to consider the specific types of exotic pets available so you will know whether you should get large exotic pets or small exotic pets. Exotic pets are interesting and fun for those who are bored of the standard dogs and cats. So what options are there?

Types of Exotic Pets

There are so many types of exotic pets on the market that it is quite literally impossible to list them all. However, a few of the more common small exotic pets include hamsters, parrots, turtles, lizards, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, parakeets, tropical fish, ferrets, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, and spiders. Some of the less common types of exotic pets include monkeys, foxes, turkeys, doves, pigeons, ducks, geese, goats, and a few exotic breeds of cats. Consider three of the top exotic pets if you want something truly unique.

First there is the sugar glider which comes from Australia and weighs no more than five ounces. These exotic pets will bond with you easily, but they are nocturnal so they will want attention mainly at night. This is why it is recommended that you have at least two in your house.

Second is the Kinkajou which is a nocturnal rainforest animal that is very affectionate. They eat mostly fruit or anything that tastes like fruit such as fruit snacks. However, when frightened or scared these pets are known to bite so if you aren't comfortable around these types of exotic pets you may want to consider another option.

Third is the white lion, but keep in mind that it is the world's most expensive pet. You also need to keep in mind that these exotic pets will grow up to be big animals, upwards of five hundred pounds. If you aren't prepared for this large of a pet then you might want to consider a smaller option.

Even if you know what type of exotic pet you want it is important that you learn what is involved in owning exotic pets. It is best to be prepared for everything that can happen with exotic pets. Carefully consider why you are getting the animal and what their needs are before brining looking for exotic pets for sale.

What Goes Into Owning Exotic Pets

Because of the care involved in owning exotic pets, buying one is never a decision that should be rushed. Rather take the time to research the animal you are considering. Talk to both organizations and those who have these animals. You should also consider why you want to get an exotic pet. It is also important to find out if local laws allow you to own exotic pets before you buy one and get attached to your new pet. Because of the expense and care that goes into exotic pets, it can also be a good idea to look into exotic pet insurance to cover any unexpected costs. Once you are sure you are prepared to get an exotic pet, where can you look for them?

Finding Exotic Pets

Depending on the type of exotic pet you choose it can be fairly easy to find them. For example, hamsters and rabbits are considered exotic pets, but they are common place so you won't have a hard time finding a place to purchase one. On the other hand, the more exotic the breed the harder it will be to find one for sale.

First, you should consider looking close to you by checking the classifieds. Sometimes you can even get a good price on exotic pets through the classifieds. Just make sure that when you buy through the classifieds you are getting a good pet. Many of the people selling pets through the classifieds aren't registered breeders of exotic pets. So make sure you carefully research and investigate before buying any questionable pet.

When it comes to exotic pets the best source is to go directly to the breeder. You can contact either a local or national organization that focuses on the pet you have chosen and ask for them to give you a list of registered breeders. The breeders can then help you select the right pet for your household as well as discuss any transportation and ownership issues. Breeders of exotic pets are very knowledgeable and can help prepare you to own an exotic pet.

Finally there is the option of buying exotic pets online. For those hard to find exotic pets, this can be the easiest method. However, it does have some risks involved. A lot of online companies can provided you with the exotic pets you want, but they may not be able to give you specific information you need or assist you after you've brought your pet home. Sometimes there can even be the issue of buying exotic pets from overseas companies and not being able to legally transport them to your country. Just like you would with the classifieds it is very important that you carefully research the seller before buying exotic pets online.

Owning exotic pets can be demanding on both your time and finances. The pets themselves can be expensive and on top of this you need to consider the cost of their habitats, food and specialist equipment. Reptiles are a good example of this, they have become a more common pet over the years but they do require specialist equipment in order for them to be successfully cared for. Many reptiles have specific heating and lighting requirements and these must be researched before you purchase your new pet. The correct reptile vivarium lighting and temperature needs to be in place and ready for the arrival of your new pet.

It is not only reptiles which require specialist equipment, any pet which is from a natural habitat which is different to that of your home will need you to plan ahead and potentially invest in equipment.
